Shop With a Cop

This program was started in Las Vegas in 1978 to give underprivileged children an opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts for themselves and family members.

Once again, the Westminster Police Department is asking the public to help donate some items to go under the children's Christmas trees. A Christmas tree, what we call the Angel Tree, is placed in the foyer of the Westminster Wal-Mart. We ask citizens to help by picking an angel, purchasing the gift requested by the child on the back, and returning the gift to Wal-Mart marked with the angel before the end of November. This program has helped 35 families and 107 children in the last four years.

On July 30th the Westminster Police Department hosted their second annual "Shop With A Cop – Back to School" program for a group of students at the Carroll Springs School, a local school for children with developmental, behavioral or emotional problems. Members of the Police Department spent their morning at the school playing and interacting with the students. They also partnered with a student to "shop" for their school supplies for the coming year – selecting their backpack and school supplies from a large supply procured by the Police Department through community donations and delivered to the school. In addition to the school supplies, more than 100 books were donated to the school library at Carroll Springs through the program. Additionally, school supplies for 60 students were packaged and delivered to five local elementary schools – these to be distributed by the individual schools based upon need.

In all the City of Westminster received very positive media coverage in local newspapers and by Channel 11 news. See video below.
