WASTEWATER FACTS AND FIGURES
The City of Westminster Wastewater Plant is an activated sludge facility with a design capacity of 5 million gallons per day (MGD). Presently the plant is treating 4.5 MGD and achieving a high percentage reduction in EPA mandated effluent parameters over influent characteristics. In 1993 the wastewater plant received an award from the Environmental Protection Agency for Maintenance Management Excellence. The City of Westminster is committed to preserving the environment. In 1996 the City entered into a voluntary agreement with the State of Maryland to construct a Biological Nutrient Removal System (BNR) at the plant. Construction was completed in 2000. After completion of the BNR project, the wastewater plant will reduce Nitrogen and Phosphorous levels of the treated effluent without the addition of costly chemicals. The Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Maryland regulate Westminster’s wastewater plant effluent. The following chart lists the plants discharge permit limits, influent characteristics and final effluent levels of the permitted parameters.
