Direct Assistance
Programs listed under Direct Assistance leverage resources for the immediate preservation of the historic character of a structure or district. These programs focus on acquisition and rehabilitation of historic structures specifically to preserve and enhance historic value. Federal and State tax incentives, for example, offer monetary relief for the sensitive renovation of historically significant buildings. Due to the intentional focus on preservation, programs in this section tend to offer the greatest amounts of money and the most regulatory control with respect to process and materials.
Indirect Assistance
Indirect Assistance programs provide assistance to governments, NPO’s, and individuals for activities that are often overlooked in the search for preservation resources. For example, weatherization funds from the Department of the Environment allow low-income individuals to afford other needed repairs on their homes while making the historic homes more attractive to future buyers. Capacity Building Grants encourage the growth of Community Development Corporations, which collectively have a successful reputation for the restoration of older, often historic neighborhoods.
Support & Consulting Services
Programs listed under Support & Consulting Services are designed to prepare local governments, non-profits, individuals, and businesses with the tools necessary to complete historic preservation projects. Assistance in this category varies from grant money for project planning to a listing of funding for cultural programs that have an historical focus. A program focusing on support and consulting activities is often seen by preservation organizations as a firm foundation for a grant or loan request in the Direct Assistance category.
