The City's Utility Maintenance Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Water Distribution System and Wastewater Collection system. Utility Maintenance Department personnel repair water leaks, eliminate sewer blockages, locate and mark lines upon receipt of Miss Utility work orders, reading and maintenance of 9100 water meters in the system, install water and sanitary sewer services, as well as perform routine and special maintenance on the water and wastewater facilities.

The water distribution system has over 161 miles of water lines, ranging in size from ¾" to 24". The system also contains seven water production wells, 438 fire hydrants as well as 4 elevated storage tanks, 1 finished water reservoir with a floating cover and 2 water booster stations. The system is actually two water systems: the main system and the Wakefield Water system, which is actually a satellite water system. The department also maintains a 122 million-gallon reservoir and 2 concrete dams.

The sewer collection system is made up of over 160 miles of sewers, ranging in size from 6" to 48". The system contains 12 Sewer Pump Stations and over 2200 manholes. Maintenance duties include video inspection of sewer mains and appurtenances; flushing, cleaning and repair of sewer mains and manholes cleaning and repairs on 9150 house service/lateral line connections. The department also maintains a 122 million-gallon reservoir and 2 concrete dams.

The City aggressively seeks to significantly reduce the infiltration and inflow entering the wastewater collection system. These flows consume valuable capacity and add additional expense to the wastewater treatment process.

Mike Zechman is the Superintendent of the Utility Maintenance Department. He can be contacted at 410-848-5043 or via email.
